Young Jeezy “The Recession” Album Review

One of this years long awaited album projects was Young Jeezy’s Recession album. That album is finally here and will go down as one of the best albums of 2008. It will certainly be regarded as one of the best southern albums of 2008 without a doubt.

The album starts with the DJ Toomp produced “Recession” Intro. This is a classic prelude to the album and also doubles as a quality title track. With news clip audio at the beginning of the intro, Young Jeezy gets into his classic verbatim to explain the reason for this album project, “It’s the Recession” repeated over a hard DJ Toomp track hammers in the album title. After hearing this intro you too will be chanting the theme.
The “Recession” wastes no time at getting better and gaining momentum. Jeezy lets us know he’s returned with “Welcome Back”. With hard synths and a coarse baseline Jeezy’s returned to what we all know him for the Trappin and Hustlin mentality.

Tracks that leaked before the album was released like “Vacation” and “Crazy World” paint a good picture of  the storyline of the album. With lyrics on “Crazy World” like “I think Bush is trying to punish us, send a lil message out to each and every one of us” just speaks of the plight that all of us are facing in this country right now.

My personal prediction for next single is between two of the best songs on the album in my opinion. The first pick for second single would be the Don Cannon produced “Circulate” which contains a classic Billy Paul sample that Don Cannon does an excellent job of making the production fit correctly with Jeezy’s vocals. This track is one of those tracks that you can ride to and it has a 70’s type of bell bottom and afro vibe to it. My second choice for a follow up single to “Put On” would be “Everything” which features Anthony Hamilton and Lil Boosie. “Your N—- aint seeing me , I put that on everything” boasts Jeezy as he displays his stunt ability on this well put together track. Lil Boosie adds that Louisiana swag to the track and Anthony Hamilton brings that classic soul vibe to the hook.
On “ Takin It There” which features Trey Songz, Jeezy gets into his “Tear It Up” mode on this one. “I don’t know If you can handle this, know if you can handle Young, If you aint had a real n—- girl you better get you one. Jeezy does a good job of telling the ladies what he feels it should be when there is a physical attraction.

Other notable tracks like the Justice League produced “Wordplay” and “Ambitionz” display Jeezy’s creativeness and willingness to step outside the box and delivery clever lyrics and wordplay no pun intended.

This album as a whole is completely above average. Young Jeezy I think has returned to his niche that is along to the “Trap or Die” style that we all flocked to when he burst onto the scene. You will rarely find yourself skipping any of the tracks on the album because it possesses the total package, good lyrics, quality production, and sticking to subject matter. With all the sub par albums that have hit the shelves of late. “The Recession” is definitely timely and will be worth your hard earned dollars in this economic crunch time.
