Plies- Da Realist- Album Review

No one can question the work ethic of, the self proclaimed “Certified Goon”. Since Plies signing to one of the biggest southern labels in the world, Slip-N-Slide Records, Plies has released numerous underground tracks. Plies, has dropped three gold albums in the last eighteen months. This is a feat that nobody has attempted nor accomplished besides the likes of that quote “New N#$% on Slip-N-Slide”. With that said, the new album from Plies, titled “Da Realist” is one of the most anticipated albums in the last quarter of 2008.

“Da Realist” album starts off with a banger that will have southern clubs enthralled titled “Me and My Goons”. Staying with the “Goon” moniker Plies starts the track with these decisive four bars, “Couple killas on my right, Couple Killas on My Left, But I am a Mother F####### Killa Myself.” On the reality laced “Gotta Be”, Plies talks about the struggles of the prison system. A strong topic that a lot of us can relate to this is one of those “make you think about it” songs.

Plies does not sell us short on this album with having that braggadocio style. He lets the audience know on “Plenty Money”, “What’s in my pocket dawg, big face hundreds, Just left the mall, bought everything that I wanted”. Plies, lets us know that he can afford the $140,000 goon piece and chain that hangs from his neck. On tracks like the Mannie Fresh produced, “Make A Movie”, Plies displays some glimmers of the style he introduced us to on the Real Testament Album. Plies and Mannie have a signature style together that should definitely be embraced on future projects.

Aside from the softer singles that target the female gender, like “Put It On Ya” and “Street Light” which features R&B powerhouse songwriter Sean Garret. Tracks like “Spend The Night” and the JR Rotem produced, “Want It Need It” featuring Ashanti, will definitely give the ladies something to vibe too.

In today’s sub par album sale market, Plies always delivers a strong project that withstands all of the buying public’s pitfalls. This album could easily be the highest selling southern album project in the last quarter of 2008. This is a testament to the grind and determination of one of the hardest working artists in the music business. Album after album, video after video, Plies continues to build on his stake of being a force in southern Hip Hop.
